Below is a list of events and activities happening at Candela Books + Gallery during the Indie PhotoBook Showcase. We hope you can make it for some or all of these great events!

Indie PhotoBook Showcase: May 6 – June 18, 2016

Thursday, May 5th

Eliot Dudik & Jared Ragland’s ONE DAY PROJECT

ONE DAY PROJECTS promotes creative dialogue by challenging artists to collaboratively produce and publish innovative projects within a 24-hour time period. The collaborative duo [Eliot Dudik &Jared Ragland] produced their first title,”BRAS-COUPÉ” during the 2015 PhotoNOLA festival. The book features photographs inspired by the Louisiana folk tale of Bras-Coupé, a one-armed runaway slave turned outlaw brigand. Multiple myths surround the character, describing him as both boogeyman and folk hero, talismanic figure and cautionary tale. From Congo Square in New Orleans to the swamps south of the city, the photographs tap into the mysteries of forgotten history yet also consider how violence continues to be played out upon the black male body.

Candela is excited to host the production of their second title featuring photographs influenced by Richmond history and folklore. Eliot & Jared will visit and photograph places rich in stories and imagery all day Wednesday, May 4th. Join us Thursday, May 5th during gallery hours, 10am – 5pm to watch them design, print, and bind their new handmade addition to the ONE DAY PROJECT.
